Which Category Applies to
You?
The following are the main categories
for residence applications.
General Skills Category
The General
Skills Category is a points system. Applicants score points for a number of factors
such as qualifications, work experience and age.
Business Categories
The objective of the business immigration
policy is to attract migrants who will contribute to New Zealands economic growth by
increasing the countrys skills base, encourage enterprise and innovation and foster
international linkages through the:
 | Investor Category
Applicants applying under the Investor Category are assessed by a points system based upon
a structure that awards points for age, business experience and investment
funds. If your score less than the passmark your application will be declined. A pass mark
is set annually by the Minister. The initial pass mark was set at 12 points. For further

 | Long Term Business Visa
The long term business category is a specific business visa/permit that has been
established to cater for potential migrants interested in applying for residence under the
Entrepreneur Category
and those interested in establishing a business in New Zealand but who do not wish to live
permanently in New Zealand. Successful applicants for a business visa would be granted a
work visa for up to three years

 | Entrepreneur Category
The Entrepreneur Category has been set up to grant residence to those people who have
established a business in New Zealand successfully for a period of two years.

 | Provision for Employees of
Relocating Businesses.
Assists the promotion of New Zealand as a place in which to invest and locate business,
this policy provision sets out to facilitate the granting of residence to employees of
businesses relocating to New Zealand. |
Family Category
The Family
Category is available to those applicants who:
 | are in a genuine and stable marriage, de
facto or homosexual relationship with a New Zealand citizen or resident; or
|
 | have immediate family members who are
New Zealand citizens or residents and who live permanently in New Zealand.
|
Humanitarian Category
The Humanitarian Category
is available to those applicants:
 | who have the support of a close family
member who is a New Zealand citizen or residence permit holder; and
|
 | whose circumstances are causing
serious physical harm or serious emotional harm to the applicant or a New Zealand party
that can only be resolved by the applicant being granted residence in New Zealand.
