Like other immigrant countries, Australia wants only good people like you!

Australia's 2001-02 Migration Program places emphasis on attracting new migrants who have education or work skills which will contribute to Australia's economic growth. Usually they have:

  • a high level of education and occupational skills; OR
  • a good track record in business; OR
  • outstanding talents in a particular field.

More than half of the 85,000 places in the Migration Program is allocated to these skilled migrants. The balance is made up of family-sponsored migrants (37,900 places) and those qualifying under special eligibility arrangements (1,600 places).

In addition, Australia has a Humanitarian Program (12,000 places) which caters for refugees and other people who have left their homes and countries because of war or civil strife or who have experienced human rights abuses.

  • skilled migrants - people with work skills or abilities that will benefit Australia;

  • business migrants - business people with a proven record of business skills and expertise;

  • employer nomination migrants - programs for Australian employers to recruit highly-skilled workers, or for the transfer of key employees into a company's Regional Headquarters;

  • family migrants - those with a close relative in Australia who can sponsor them, or who are in a relationship with a person eligible to nominate them;

  • special eligibility - for former citizens of Australia, former residents of Australia, and for family of New Zealand citizens settling in Australia;

  • refugees/humanitarian entrants - people who are recognised as refugees or eligible on other humanitarian grounds;

  • New Zealand citizens - a number of options exist.
