    Who can get R-1 visa?

    The foreign ministers of religion, (b) religious professionals, and other religious workers.

    What requirements?

    1. Must have been a member of the same religious denomination as the employer in the United States.

    2. Must have at least two years' membership immediately preceding the time of application for admission.

    3. Religious denomination must be a bona fide nonprofit, religious organization in the United States.

    4. Must enter the United States to perform the work as follows:

solely to carry on the vocation of a minister of the religious denomination (ministers);
to work for the religious organization at the request of the organization in a professional capacity (religious professionals); or
to work for the organization, or a bona fide organization which is affiliated with the religious denomination, at the request of the organization in a religious vocation or occupation (other religious workers).

    Duration of Stay and Extensions

    An R-1 nonimmigrant may be admitted for an initial period of up to three years, with extensions in two-year increments for a total of five consecutive years. No extensions are permitted beyond the five-year period unless the alien has resided and been physically present outside the United States for at least one year.

    Family Members

    The R-1 alien's spouse and unmarried minor children under the age of twenty-on may be admitted under R-2 status, provided that the principal alien will be employed and residing primarily in the United States. R-2 dependents are not permitted to work in the United States.
