Q Visa
Q-1 Visas are issued for international cultural exchange visitors. It is issued to the foreign nationals who are coming to the US to participate in an international cultural exchange program. Under the Q-1 visa, the foreign national can engage in practical training and employment so long as they are also sharing the history, culture and traditions of their home country. Participants in the "Q" program must have the designated sponsoring organization file Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker, with the Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department of Homeland Security (USCIS). The USCIS will notify the sponsor on Form I-797 when the petition is approved. It should be noted that the approval of a petition does not guarantee visa issuance to an applicant found to be ineligible under the Immigration and Nationality Act.
To obtain Q visa, the U.S. employer must obtain an approval of their international cultural exchange program from the USCIS:
  1. must take place in a school, museum, business, or similar location where the public, or at least the interested public, can be exposed to aspects of a foreign culture as part of a structured program;
  2. program must include a cultural component as an essential and integral part of the cultural visitor¡¯s employment or training; and
  3. program cannot provide for employment or training independent of the cultural component.

Q visa is for aliens who are coming to the U.S. for a period not to exceed 15 months, as a participant in an international cultural exchange program designed to provide practical training, employment and the sharing of the history, culture and traditions of the country of the alien's nationality

The dependents could be granted B-2 visas for the duration of the Q-1 visa holder¡¯s stay in the US, up to 12 months at one time. (Not Q-2 Visa)
Note: Q-2 visa issued to Irish nationals. This visa is to provide an opportunity for young people in areas that have a long history of violence and chronic unemployment to learn job skills and conflict resolution and then contribute what they have learned to the rejuvenation of the region. Q-2 visas will be issued in only three years, 2000, 2001 and 2002, and the visas are good for a maximum of three years. This program is designed to further steps toward peace in Ireland by providing employment and training opportunities to young people who live in areas where sectarian violence has been common.

The following requirement must meet to get the approval for Q-2 Visa:

a.) T he applicant must be from Northern Ireland or one of the counties in the Republic of Ireland that border Northern Ireland ¨C Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Louth, Monaghan and Sligo.

b.) The applicant must be 35 or under at the time of entry into the US.

c.) The applicant must have resided in a qualifying location (Northern Ireland or one of the six counties in the Republic of Ireland) for the three months prior to the application.
