USCIS Advises on the Six Month Timeframe to Receive Green Card

How long after an I-485 is approved should the cards be issued, and could USCIS please explain the process of card issuance? Members have reported that some applicants have not received cards within 60 days of approval. When calling the NCSC, they are advised that the cards have not yet been "ordered." ANSWER: For Family-based cases with an MSC receipt: The officer will update the ICMS database and then the card will be ordered. A card should be received within 60 days and if not, an inquiry should be placed. For cases where the immigrant visa was issued overseas, the process may take a bit longer. If a card is not received within 60 days, contact the NCSC to inquire. For employment-based cases, cards should also be issued within 60 days, and if one is not received, contact the NCSC to inquire. If the NCSC states that the card was sent and it was not received, an I-90 can be filed without fee. If the NCSC states that the card has not been ordered, then they will issue a Service request to the Service Center. AILA-SCOPS Q & A January 23, 2008
